We like to build up a good relationship with each of our clients, where we know them and where they know us and trust our approach. This section therefore sets out to give you information about us - our firm, our advisers, our fee basis, Terms of Business - whatever you want to know about us.
We are a firm of fee based financial planners specialising in wealth and tax management for high net worth private individual clients and/or business owners.
We have three financial planners - Tony Byrne, Roger Prest and David Cooke. We are all highly experienced, trained up to date and well qualified.
We are fee based which means that the basis for all of our work is fees. You cannot become a client of our firm without first signing our fee agreement. We offer a clear menu of fees giving you the choice to adopt whichever option suits you best. We also offer a fees with commission offset option which many clients like because it allows initial commission to be offset against our fees and saves the VAT which would otherwise be chargeable. It is also possible to save Income Tax and Corporation Tax on our fees. See the section "How we are paid" for more details.

Our firm

We are fee based financial planners specialising in wealth and tax management for high net worth individual clients and/or business owners.

Our approach is one of an advisory, personal, friendly face-to-face service. All advice is tailor-made to suit each client's unique individual personality and requirements. We develop long term relationships with our clients which usually include annual reviews. Each client is treated as an individual and is assigned a personal financial planner. We have a team approach which means that several members of our team service each client not just the financial planner.

Wealth And Tax Management Limited is a sister company of Byrne Williams Limited, Independent Financial Advisers. Byrne Williams Limited has been established since 1986 whereas Wealth And Tax Management Limited has been established since 1999. Wealth And Tax Management was created to meet the growing demand for fee based high quality advice to wealthy individuals and business owners. The company has established some unique tools and services to meet the highly demanding needs of this group of individuals.

All of our advisers have at least two decades of experience each in financial planning. Our backgrounds range from accountants and insurance companies to Independent Financial Advisers.

Our expertise encompasses the area of wealth and tax management. We manage clients' investments and pension funds and minimise the impact of taxation, especially Inheritance Tax. We have a number of unique tools and resources which are very popular and effective as evidenced by the many long standing client relationships we have.

As our service is a personal face-to-face advisory one, most of our clients typically live fairly locally within a 20 miles radius of our office. However, we do have clients who live much further away, including some who have emigrated! We welcome clients who live outside our immediate catchment area as long as they are prepared to visit us once a year for their annual review!

How we are paid

On receiving your enquiry we invite you to come to our offices (or exceptionally if this is not possible at your place of work or home) for a preliminary meeting. The purpose of this meeting is firstly to establish whether we are able to assist with your needs and help you meet your objectives, and secondly to discuss how we would be paid for our counsel and services once you have instructed us to proceed.

There is no charge for this preliminary one-hour meeting, and no obligation on either side.

We work on a fee basis on one or more of the following options;

1. Fixed fee with commission offset. Surplus commission belongs to the client.

2. Reduced fixed fee with commission offset. Surplus commission is retained by us.

3. A competitive hourly rate for all staff members.

4. A % annual fee based on the value of funds being advised on by us. This fee is typically 0.5%-1.00% p.a.

5. A value added fee. This is typically a one-off such as an innovative tax mitigation scheme. Fees are negotiable but typically 10%-20% of, say, the tax saved.

6. A £nil fee where there will definitely be a commission payable which would at least offset the fee otherwise chargeable and the client has made a commitment to proceed. This is very much an exceptional situation which is rarely likely to happen.

At all times, we will ensure that you are fully aware of any costs involved, usually in the form of a fixed fee agreement or a fees estimate, before a commitment is made. Fees attract an additional VAT charge at a current rate of 17.5%.

Where we move on to implement the financial plan by arranging, for instance, a life policy or pension plan, we may be paid commission by the provider, usually an insurance company or an investment house for the successful placing of business. We will always tell you about any commission we earn, and it will be taken into account in working out our fee.

We charge annual retainer fees, payable monthly, for our service. This service is suitable for those clients who want regular annual reviews.

Fund based renewal commission is usually paid to us at a typical rate of 0.5% p.a. of the value of the client's investments and pensions. These renewal commissions subsidise the annual review fees and pay for the administration in servicing the clients' plans.

Annual retainer fees are not offset against commission and fund based renewal commission is not offset against fees.

Our fees may be reduced in a number of ways. If the fees are paid by commission offset then the VAT @ 17.5% may be saved. Income Tax or Corporation Tax may be saved by the self-employed person, partnership or limited company where our fees are deemed to qualify as a business expense. You should take advice from an accountant to verify this point. Another way of getting tax relief for payment of our fees is to pay them, where possible,through a pension scheme. This is a highly tax efficient way of paying fees as potentially both the VAT at 17.5% and Income Tax or Corporation Tax at rates up to 40% may be saved.
