HMRC changes bank accounts

Wednesday, 01 April 2009 00:00

Those of you who pay your tax bills with an HMRC paying-in slip, or online, will notice some changes soon.

The Taxman is changing bank accounts from the Bank of England to the Royal Bank of Scotland and Citi, the American banking group. This means that new slips must be used in the future, and that the correct account and sort code details must be used when making payments online.

The new accounts will be used in parallel with the existing accounts until the end of next year. However, HMRC will be writing to everyone who pays tax in this way over the next year to inform us of the changes.

The important point here is that you are responsible for making sure the payment gets to HMRC. If payments go astray, then you will be liable for the loss, and interest will be charged.

Take care over the next 12 months to make sure that your payments are being made correctly, and please make sure you throw away any old paying-in slips that you may have.
