It's not just the UK, Dummy

Monday, 01 June 2009 00:00

We have noticed of late the almost singular reliance on UK stocks placed by stockbrokers. Investing in the UK is a good thing, but there is a danger in not benefiting from the growth in world economies.

The UK is a mature market, and there is not a great deal of growth left in it. This is because our population is ageing, and unless you are invested in stocks that can take advantage of this, long-term (next 10 years or so) growth is restricted.

It is for this reason that we recommend that you look to investments outside of the UK for the longer term. In particular, look towards the so-called "developing" economies. Now, this will not be an easy ride. It's rather like when you learned to ride a bike. You fell off a lot, and got hurt, and wondered if it was easier just to walk and run. But once you got going, you could go much further and faster on your bike, even though you knew that when you fell off - which you would inevitably do - it would hurt.

You should be speaking to your advisers to consider moving into investments outside the UK for your longer-term holdings, rather than keeping everything in the UK. Remember that this is a long-term strategy, and so a slow transition would be sensible, perhaps spread out over time, but you will find it will provide dividends in the years to come.
